Using AI in your classes

As you explore the use of artificial intelligence and large language model tools for your coursework, it’s important to remember that students enrolled at all University of Missouri System campuses are bound to a Standard of Conduct that defines expectations for academic integrity, including the use of such tools.

It is also essential to protect yourself and your data as you use these applications. The Division of IT continually monitors privacy and security risks and publishes a list of AI tools and data allowed for use. Note: A tool approved by DoIT is not necessarily approved for use in your coursework. Consult your course syllabus and instructor for specific details, allowances and prohibitions on AI use.

Studying with AI

For courses where AI is not prohibited, here are some examples of what AI can do to help you study:

  • Generate study questions.
  • Summarize information and produce flashcards.
  • Create example test or quiz questions.
  • Act as a reflection partner to deepen understanding on a topic or subject.

Using AI as a tutor

To use an AI tutor effectively, write prompts that command the AI to guide you with Socratic, open-ended questions rather than giving direct answers. Share your current skill level, ask for simple step-by-step explanations with real-world analogies and request mini-quizzes to test your understanding (Harvard Business School).

Active learning prompts

  • Request step-by-step guidance. Prompt AI to break down hard proofs, code blocks or historical events into small micro-lessons, asking you a check-in question after each step.
  • Calibrate via quizzes. Ask AI to generate interactive practice quizzes based exclusively on your uploaded lecture notes rather than general internet data.
  • Feynman technique check. Write out an explanation of a complex theory in your own words, paste it into AI, and ask: "Critique my explanation. Tell me what conceptual gaps or misconceptions I still have."

"Explain [complex topic, e.g., quantum computing or neural networks] to me as if I am a college freshman with no background in this field. Break it down using simple terms, clear examples, and visual analogies. Avoid unnecessary jargon."

"Act as an expert exam prep tutor for my [course name, e.g., Biology 1010 or Economics 1051] course. Based on the following study notes, generate a 5-question, multiple-choice practice quiz covering the core concepts. Do not show the answer key right away. Show one question at a time, wait for my response, and tell me if I am right or wrong with a short explanation before giving me the next question. Here are my notes: [paste notes]"

"I have an upcoming mid-term exam on [topic, e.g., organic chemistry or US history since 1865]. Give me 3 challenging open-ended, short-answer questions that test critical thinking on this topic. After I submit my written answers, grade my responses on a scale of 1-10, identify any missing points or inaccuracies, and show me how to rewrite them for full credit."

"I am struggling to understand [topic/formula, e.g., photosynthesis or supply and demand curves]. Walk me through this concept step-by-step, using a real-world analogy. After explaining each step, ask me a simple follow-up question to test my understanding before moving on to the next part. Do not give away all the information at once."

"I am attaching my lecture notes and reading outline for [subject]. Please synthesize this content into a structured study guide. Format it with: 1) A 3-sentence summary of the main takeaway; 2) Key terminology and definitions formatted for flashcards; and 3) The top 3 most likely concepts to appear on an exam."

Academic integrity

Academic integrity covers a variety of topics but, in regard to AI, is primarily concerned with plagiarism and cheating. The Standard of Conduct specifically prohibits most uses of AI in coursework unless explicitly permitted by the instructor. Always check with your instructor if uncertain.

These resources are designed to assist you in correctly citing the use of AI in your coursework. However, your instructors may have additional methods or require additional information. When in doubt, always refer to the syllabus and don't hesitate to ask your instructor for clarification.
