Lights, Slides, Action: Teaching and Sharing with PechaKucha

Date: Wed, Apr 22, 2026
Time: 03:00 PM - 03:45 PM

PechaKucha (Japanese for "chit-chat") is a fast-paced presentation style featuring 20 slides displayed for 20 seconds each, totaling 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Originated in 2003 by Tokyo architects to curb long, boring presentations, it uses image-heavy slides to foster storytelling, creativity, and concise communication.

Please join us for three presentations by UM System instructors and see this engaging presentation style in action.

Using Pecha Kucha Presentations in the Classroom presented by Sarah Stanley, Associate Professor, Business Information. This presentation will be given in Pecha Kucha style (i.e. 20 slides; 20 seconds each) and will address the advantages Sarah has witnessed from using Pecha Kucha in her own classroom. She will also address the possible drawbacks or instances where this may not be the best choice for the classroom. Open discussion to follow.

Sparky: An AI Teaching Assistant in Civil Engineering presented by Seogjae Choi, Assistant Teaching Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering. Students should learn how to leverage AI in their field. With 3 examples, I will introduce how young civil engineers can use AI to expand their learning and how the instructor can design AI-resilient assessment.

Six Minutes and Forty Seconds of Better Thinking presented by Alexis Petri, Director, UMKC Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence

We'll have plenty of time for questions, so join us to learn more about this style of presenting.

Using Mathpix and More to Support Accessibility in Quantitative Classes: Equations and symbols are at the heart of many STEM courses — but making them accessible can feel daunting. Mathpix is a tool that converts handwritten and digital math into formats that are easier for faculty to prepare and more accessible for students to use.

In this recorded session, colleagues across the UM System shared how Mathpix is being applied in teaching and how it can reduce stress for faculty while opening learning opportunities for students.
