Canvas Portfolio provides a replacement for the currently offered ePortfolio solutions in Canvas (Canvas ePortfolios/Folio/Portfolium). This product, currently in beta, provides a more tightly integrated tool allowing students to showcase their work to outside audiences.
Planned timeline
- Fall 2025 semester: Limited pilot for faculty.
- Beginning of spring 2026 semester: Widened Pilot available
- Mid-spring 2026 semester: General availability of Canvas Portfolio.
- June 30, 2026: End of life for previous portfolio solutions (Canvas ePortfolios/Folio/Portfolium).
FAQ
The primary change is that the new ePortfolio tool will feature expanded abilities to have guided ePortfolios that are more faculty-driven. This feature is still in development and is not part of the pilot scope.
There is no migration support being provided by Canvas/Instructure. UM Academic Technology is investigating a possible archival of the Canvas ePortfolios content. Any content in Folio/Portfolium will have to be migrated by the content owner due to the lack of administrative access to the tool.
Once a user loses access to Canvas, they also lose access to edit their ePortfolio. Existing links to the portfolio will still function.
At this time, the ability to template portfolios is not being supported as part of this pilot, but there is the potential for this functionality in the Evaluation Portfolio type that is still being developed.
Pilot expectations
Faculty selected for this pilot should be prepared to utilize Canvas Portfolio in an active course, and provide feedback to UM Academic Technology (UM AT) on the ease of use, functionality, and limitations that were discovered. A brief survey will be sent directly to participants nearing the end of the pilot period.
To express interest in participating, please complete the Join a Pilot form, and a member of the UM AT team will reach out to you.
