This hybrid session for University of Missouri System faculty and staff explores how the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law designed to protect the privacy of student education records, applies in digital teaching & learning environments. Brenda Selman will provide an overview of FERPA principles, and registrars from other campuses will be available via Zoom to answer campus-specific questions. Missouri Online instructional designers and technologists will lead an interactive activity for attendees to practice identifying common FERPA violations in various digital tools (Outlook, Canvas, Zoom, etc.). Presenters will explain why each is a violation and show other methods and tools that align with best practices.
